Your company is finally ready to get its Web site created or
updated. Now what? There are many things to consider when
creating your new online look. The following are some tried
and true Do’s and Donts of Web design.
1. Clean and Friendly. What does your Web site say about your company at first glance? Are you up to date and modern, or a dinosaur with a Web site from the 90s? The “Web 2.0” look is summed up in a few words: SIMPLE, CLEAN and USER-FRIENDLY. Web 2.0 starts with the design. Todays Web sites are less and less cluttered. There is more “white space” and the information is laid out in an easy to follow pattern.
2. Modern Flow Patterns. A great way to keep your Web site simple and still deliver the information you need is to use a modern flow pattern. There have been many studies on where users first look at a Web page and where their eyes look after that. Two of the most popular theories on these patterns are the F and Z patterns. They are named this simply because of the shape. For example; in the F pattern, content is laid out in an F where the top line in the F is the most important then they scroll down, then over, then down, in an F shape. The Z pattern is the same theory but in a Z shape.
3. No Tables. The first rule of Web development is: NO TABLES. Web design used to be based entirely on tables. We now have much more efficient methods to program a Web site. xHTML markup with CSS is the best way to structure a Web page.
4. Optimize your SEO. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is how certain Web sites get ranked higher then others on search engines like Google. There are many ways to optimize a Web site for keywords, and it is important the Web company you use actually knows what they are doing. One easy way to check is to see where they rank for the keywords they target for their own Web site.
