Web designers have struggled with using cool web fonts and balancing SEO for a long time. The time is coming to an end. Font-Face is the newest and coolest tool in the web design belt.

It use to be that, when a designer wanted to use a "non-standard" web font, they had to make that text and image, therefore, taking away most of its SEO value. This was a delicate balance which usually favored in making the design less cosmetic and more SEO friendly. This dark day is finally, almost, over.

First there was Cufon. Cufon allows you to take plain SEO friendly text and instantly transforms it into a font you want, in form of an image. The fact that it starts as text, STILL gets you that SEO benefit, but it is still not ACTUAL text. You can not copy and paste the text and it can mess up spacing, occasionally. Cufon is still a great tool, when used correctly. But now there is a better option.

Font-Face is basically taking a font and hosting it so that it is viewable on your website. Google has taken that one step further, and made it easy for web designers. They have hosted a directory of fonts for you, and add to the list often. GOOGLE FONT DIRECTORY is a great way to have ACTUAL text on your site, and still find some very cool and modern fonts.

On this very site, we currently use Cufon, but we really only use it for our HEADER TAGS. Using Font-Face is something we will definitely be using more and more with our own stuff, and client sites. We are very excited with the possibilities it offers.
